Rock N’ Roll in my Butthole

July 7th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Punk rock porn star Joanna Angel is a badass, let’s just get down to it. I first met Joanna over a year ago and immediately had a crush on her, wanted her to like me, and wanted to know everything about her. This little lady is striking.

Besides being one of the sexiest girls in the biz, Joanna is the owner of two websites, JoannaAngel.com and BurningAngel.com. I’ve spent a lot of time on Burning Angel lately (yeah, I’m a perv), which in addition to Joanna features pics, videos and blogs of other women set up in profiles (similar to MySpace). It’s a more hardcore and interesting version of what was (once) good and hot about Suicide Girls. The women are uniquely gorgeous, and fill their pages with details about their lives, including why they love doing what they do.

Joanna has hit on so much of what is most enticing about women: their strikingly different personalities, body shapes and sizes, adornments and tattoos, and that they can love being naked and having sex- something a lot of people still can’t get their minds around. The jist: her shit is hot.

I met up with Joanna at a tiny recording studio in Atwater to witness the recording of her first (bound to be) hit single, “Rock n’ Roll in my Butthole”- amazing! She was excited and a little nervous, and sat on a schleppy black leather couch reading over the lyrics (that she wrote), while her partner in crime, princessFrank, recorded all of the instrumental portions and his vocals. Sidebar: this guy is seriously talented, and happens to be adorable… just sayin’…

When it came time for Joanna to record her vocals, mama brought it home! All nervousness dropped, and there she was, all 4 foot 11 of her, belting out “LUBE IT UP, AND GIVE IT TO ME RRIIIIIIIIIGGGGHHHHTTT!!!” Uh, I nearly peed in my pants.

The song is fucking amazing. I thought it was going to be a joke at best, but five minutes into it I was dying for a copy. I was actually singing it this morning while spooning dog food into my pup’s bowls. Wowza.

I know… it’s so good.

What strikes me about Joanna is how she happened into becoming the global phenomenon that she is today. She didn’t come from some crazy background, or act like she was just born to be a star. She was a nerdy college kid that found her inner diva doing a nude photoset- and then blogged her way through the whole adventure. Of course, we had to sit down and grill her for all of the details…

Shady Sadie: How did you get into porn?

Joanna Angel: It’s not like I really “got into porn”. It was in my senior year of college I was actually fairly awkward, and not a sexually liberated woman at all. I was more like an animal rights activist, and I didn’t put that much effort into my appearance. My roommate, like most guys, liked porn, and one day he was like, “Hey, do you want to start a porn site with me?” And I said sure, but we didn’t start anything for a few months, and I wasn’t planning on being on it.

My roommate borrowed money from his parents, and after asking a few girls if we could shoot them for the site (who were really put off by it), I realized that it was weird asking people to do something I wouldn’t do myself. So we went into the basement where my roommate’s band was practicing, and we took a bunch of naked photos of me. And I looked at the pictures, and I was like, “I look sexy!” So I went out and bought lingerie that I would never have bought before, and I totally found an exhibitionist side of myself.

And that was the beginning of the website, 6 years ago. Burning Angel at first was just photos of myself and my friends, and it barely even worked.

SS: When did you start doing sex scenes?

Joanna Angel: That was in 2004. I met a friend at a party one year who worked for Vivid, and he thought it was funny that some girl was running a porn site out of her basement. He suggested that I go to the AVN conference, and he got me passes. I went, and I was like, “Oh my god- porn is really an industry!” And I thought, this is incredible- all the girls, all dolled up, all this crazy glamorous stuff- I was enthralled by everything. So on the plane ride home, I decided we needed to really make porn, and make it our way, with our girls.

Then I did my first sex scene – I found a guy in New York (Tommy Pistol), and it was his first sex scene and mine, and we shot it on a rooftop in Brooklyn with a bunch of hipsters having a BBQ and watching. And that turned into our first film, BurningAngel.com, the movie.

SS: What it like being a smart, business savvy woman in the porn industry?

Joanna Angel: What people don’t realize is that there are a lot of smart people in the porn industry. When I was in college, I felt like I was around a lot of the same person, and everyone though they knew everything. But I really like that I’ve been able to meet so many different people in the porn industry who grew up so differently and that’s made me smarter.

It’s not like I ever go to onto a porn set or to a porn party and am like, “Oh my god, I’m so much smarter than everybody here, I’m so out of place”. There are so many amazing business people in the industry, and some of them have gone to school, and some of them haven’t.

SS: With so many people in the industry, how have you built your fan base and had staying power?

Joanna Angel: I’ve actually always kept a blog! I’ve kept a blog since 2004 or 2005, and I really stay in touch with my fans. I feel bad because now with MySpace I can’t always get back to everyone, but I feel like people have lived my life with me. I think a lot of people feel like they’ve kind of moved along with me, and they have. I’ve tried to break down that wall– I’m not some girl who stands on a pedestal, I’m real. When I was single I wrote about coming home by myself, all lonely; or how hard it was to run the company by day and strip by night, and all of those people were there for me. I think the blog kept people connected to me over the years.

SS: Are you excited about “Rock and Roll in my Butthole”?

Joanna Angel: I’m so excited about the song! That’s the thing I love about Burning Angel– we do movie reviews, music reviews, the girls have blogs– it can be anything, it can spawn into anything, I’ve met so many people… So we have this movie coming out, and it’s an all-anal movie, and we were thinking about what to call it, and I thought of Rock n’ Roll in My Butt hole and I thought what a great song it would make.

I’m really excited! I think it’s really catchy; it would be great if it was played on radio stations and at clubs and people are singing along…

But, you know, I’m definitely not one of those porn girls who’s trying to get out of porn. I mean, there’s a lot of girls who do cameos in mainstream movies, and really want to transition to that- but everything I do is trying to get more people to my porn site. But, I do think it would be cool to do more music for my movies, and maybe one day we’ll come out with an album!

SS: A lot of people to seem to think that women don’t like doing porn, and say that they are objectified and exploited. What do you say to that?

Joanna Angel: You know, people have used the terms “exploited’ and “objectified” so much, and I wonder, do they even know what that means anymore? Does that mean I’m looking at a woman and thinking she’s a couch? (Laughs) Or is it that she’s not talking about philosophy or literary theory? You know, it’s ok to look at a woman and think of her sexually. That’s ok to do.

SS: How do you feel about having sex?

Joanna Angel: I love having sex, with men and women. And porn is great because you get to have sex with people who are professionals at having sex! I mean, after my first scene with my boyfriend, I was like, “Wow! This is how it’s supposed to be done!” And the first time I did a scene for someone else, I couldn’t believe I got paid. I just had great sex! I was like, “Maybe I should be paying them… I just got serviced!” I’m lucky.

SS: So, Shady Sadie poll… Butt sex, yay or nay?

Joanna Angel: I do like butt sex, but some people are better at it than others. And you do really need to know your body, and how you like it. It’s always hot for a girl to know how she likes sex.

Amen, sister.

We heart you.
