Self Lovin’: Nail Zen

July 30th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Ah… painting my nails- one of my favorite ways to completely zen out. When I’ve had a long day, am anxious or need to do something completely mindless to focus on for 15 minutes- that’s what I do.

Now, I have to confess, two of my closest friends did have an intervention with me about this past time about six months ago. They sat me down and alerted me to the fact that though they didn’t think it was hurting anyone, per se, they were sure that I was completely obsessed with painting my nails- and felt that I might want to deal with it.

And… fair. At the time, I was painting my nails at least three times a week, and sometimes more. Some nights I would paint them, take off the polish, pick a different color and go ahead and paint them again. I know that sounds crazy, but in my defense it’s the actual painting of my nails that I find so theraputic. Having painted nails is okay, but once they start to chip, I start peeling… and sometimes I even run my teeth along the edge of my nail to start it chipping, and then start picking at it… oh, forget it!

I am happy to say that today I am in a  totally good place with nail-painting, and it wasn’t ever a true problem (much…). Now I do it (maybe) once a week, and I leave it on until it’s all kinds of chipped, and then I take it off. But, I still wouldn’t trade that crazy nail-obsessed time for anything- it was glorious (except for the fact that my man hated me because nail polish gives him a killer headache).

BTW— the pic above, that’s my all-time favorite color- OPI, Lincoln Park After Dark. They’ve tagged it as “where purple meets midnight”. Oh, man… it’s so good, I wore it on my wedding day- hands and feet. :)
