For a year, Norah Vincent went undercover and lived her life as a man. She documented her experiences - from dating to infiltrating a men’s therapy group - in her book, “Self-Made Man.” But in Vincent’s transition back to presenting herself as female, she became so depressed that she checked herself into a mental institution. Based on her time there, Vincent wrote “Voluntary Madness.”
If anyone has something to say about gender roles and our society, it is this woman. In this interview, Katie Robertson of Los Angeles I Am talks to her about her experiences. “It’s been a path,” says Vincent. “The initial book was stumbling around, breaking things…the second one was me turning inward.”
Good stuff.

a few things i really like about this interview:
1) Katie is REAL, and asks REAL questions. She doesn’t come off as fake or overly polished, and I really like that in a journalist.
2) Norah is obviously a really interesting person, and I”m curious to read this second book, b/c I wasn’t such a big fan of her first (sorry… just sang).
3) I LOVE the street noise in this interview. It adds a lot.
