Tinseltown Tease: Why NOT A Strip Club Job Fair?

March 23rd, 2009 · 3 Comments

Can you do this?

This is just so genius.

The Foxy Lady, a strip club in Rhode Island, is hosting a job fair to find new employees:

They say they’re looking to fill around 30 positions, from strippers and waitresses to disc jockeys and bartenders, at that club and two others in Massachusetts.

Now, I know that sex work isn’t for everyone. Some women will know right off the bat that getting the girls out isn’t for them. Fair enough. But for a few curious others, it’s the stigma that keeps them from trying it…and maybe something like a job fair is just the way to begin chipping away at that stone.

I mean, listen. The first time I went into a strip club to audition, I was convinced that I was heading down a path so sordid I may never return: the path of the lost, loose woman, paved with disgrace, degradation, plastic surgery and misery. But instead, no sooner did my Lucite-clad foot hit the stage than I discovered the inherent freedom of getting (nearly) naked in public, and the innocent joy of a cold, hard dollar bill (or a twenty) tucked snugly inside a g-string. I developed a profound passion for the art of the pole trick, and…ah yes, I became wealthy. So very wealthy. For a short time, anyway.

My point is, if strip club managers do manage to drag their seedy asses into the daylight for something as “normal” as a job fair, will the work begin to be normalized, too? Will those broke yet curious women be able see sex work as a viable employment opportunity, and even glimpse the possibility of having - wait for it - positive experiences, similar to mine?

It might be a long shot, but I’d like to think it could happen. So good luck to you, ladies of Rhode Island. Do your thing. And remember - there is no shame in the strip club game.
